Tips on Selecting a Plus Size Wardrobe

Selecting a plus size wardrobe shouldn’t be hard. However, sometimes we make the wrong outfit decisions, which leads to our friends staging a fashion intervention. I would like to help you prevent that from happening. If you follow these simple steps, you’ll be getting more compliments than you can count in no time!

Step #1: Say goodbye to shapeless garments

Although you may think that shapeless garments are doing wonders to hide all the parts of your body you feel self-conscious about, you’re wrong. These garments create an unfavorable appearance that will make you look bulkier than you actually are. For example, I have wide hips that I don’t want to showcase to the world. If you do, too, you shouldn’t try to cover them up with baggy clothes. What you’ll end up with is a “tent-shaped” garment, since the fabric will cling to your hips and bust. Instead, you should find clothes that accentuate your best attributes, while in turn, hiding the ones you don’t prefer.

Step #2: Ditch the black

Just because I have a fuller shape doesn’t mean I only wear black clothes. Contrary to many opinions, black isn’t the most slimming color for curvy shapes. I like to wear colorful clothes as much as the next person. So, that’s what I do. I find colors that will accentuate my eyes and my hue.

Don’t opt for black clothing just because you heard it looks better on a fuller figure. If you style your clothes the right way, you can wear any color you like.

Step #3: Order from online plus-sized stores

Don’t get discouraged if your local shop doesn’t carry your size, or if their designs aren’t flattering on a full figure. Clothing websites have a variety of different clothing sizes and designs to choose from, so you should definitely try ordering.

Also, each of them offers a size chart for reference. However, you should double-check these charts before confirming your order, since each site may have a different sizing chart. So, a size 14 in one store may actually be a size 12 in another store.

Step #4: Avoid tapered pants and denim jeans

Now, I find that tapered pants and denim jeans don’t flatter ANY figure, whether you are slim or plus-sized. Instead, you should opt for a streamlined shape for your pants, which is a straight leg from your hips, down to the floor. The same applies to denim jeans.  Also, if your hips are a problem area for you, consider buying some flare jeans. I was skeptical at first, but as soon as I bought my first pair of flares, I immediately loved the way they flattered my figure.

Try shopping at Hoticle for a pair of great designer denim jeans. Also, for the best results, pair up your flare jeans with some high heels. Trust me, you won’t be sorry!

Step #5: Say NO to jumbo motifs and shapes

Jumbo motifs and shapes on dresses should be banned, in my opinion.  First of all, the pattern size should match your proportions. So, if you are on the shorter side, try to completely avoid big patterns. What I like to do is to pick one item per outfit that has a big print on it. For example, I like to wear a shirt with a nice pattern or print and pair it with some black leggings.

Step #6: Buy a full figured bra

I can’t emphasize this enough: buy a bra that fits you like a glove! Bra straps digging into my shoulders, cup spillage, and general discomfort have made buying the perfect bra my number one priority in life. Luckily, there are plenty of online stores that I found to be quite accommodating. And, you can buy your favorite bras in bulk!

However, you can also find plenty of plus-size bras at specialty bra stores. Perhaps it’s a good idea to ask for a professional opinion when buying your first bra. Most stores offer help with determining your bra size, so don’t dismiss the idea. That’s the best way to find out what your true size is.

Step #7: Jazz up your look with some accessories

Once you’ve bought all the clothing items you need, it’s time for some accessories! I like wearing jewelry no matter what clothes I’m wearing. However, be careful not to overdo it. Pick out some pieces that compliment your outfit. For example, if I’m wearing a simple outfit, I like to add a bold necklace that draws attention to my look. If I’m wearing a shirt with a print, I like to tone down my jewelry, by wearing only a pair of simple, yet eye-catching earrings.

Step #8: Love your body, no matter what shape it is

So, you aren’t slim, and you can’t just walk into the first store and buy whatever you like. That’s perfectly fine. No matter what size you are, you should learn to love your body. You can look good in plus-sized clothes; it’s just a matter of picking the right ones. Therefore, don’t feel sorry for yourself. Go out and try some clothes, I guarantee you will feel like a million bucks once you find some flattering outfits.
